Education was in Chicago, Emmett Grammar school and The Austin High School. Higher education was the corner of Madison and Central, "The Corner" on Chicago's west side. On one corner of "The Corner" was a drug store with a soda fountain where you could get drinks, etc. Outside among other things we pitched pennies and just hung out. On the other side of the street was Emmett Grammar School and the playground {PG}. It had a huge ball field where we spent alot of time. And down the street was the Bowling Alley [BA]., with about 32 alleys and pool and billiard tables. Alot of time was spent up there also. The Corner was a busy place where there were always "Characters" around from young guys to older men. Bookies, Gambling, and just hanging out. This was what we did from around 6th grade on. No drugs, no violence, just fun and sports and hanging out.

corner 6

To get a feel for the Corner read my profile. Another one of our "age" guys would pronounce words backwards. Why, I cannot figure, but sometimes he would draw us into doing the same. For example, if he was to call some one a bum he would say mub. Some words he would spell backwards but could not pronouce what he came up with so he would modify. The Nose he would call Sone, our little group of 5 within the larger, The Big Seven he would prounce it Gib Vesen. See thats how he would modify what he was not able to pronounce. After marriage I lost touch with him but we reconnected and he is now a businessman who does not seem to be doing that backward stuff , I wonder if there is any connection. As we got older, teenage and older, there did not seem to be a bunch of young guys hanging out there Maybe we and the older guys were the last of the hanging out bunch. Too bad, the "corner", had everything, character and characters.
